Trump saved these big announcements for this holiday time period. There are fewer people in Washington to make a ruckus over them. The media people are quieter. It’s a time of peace and good will, so he gets public psychology on his side. He makes the news because there are typically fewer competing announcements from other agencies. The govt. shutdown helps.
Furthermore, he’s preempting Mueller who soon will be making noise. Trump is building favorable public opinion. Also, this makes the DEM. impeachment and other hearings seem ancient history, anachronisms.
The timing is no accident. It’s shrewd.
On a longer term basis, it has taken 2 years for this decisive Syria move to surface. Syria was always going to be a major test case for which way Trump would go. He couldn’t jump out right away, however, without creating a much larger reaction than at present. It would have looked too abrupt and too weak. Trump’s longer-term timing is also no accident. He has shrewdly played his hand against a broad array of inimical forces from almost the whole political spectrum.
