Fifty-one years ago Harry Browne published How I Found Freedom in an Unfree World. Yes, it is crucially important and imperative — and often heroic — to oppose the tyranny of statism and its seemingly endless controls over our lives. But at the same time there is a whole world of freedom outside of the state, said Harry Browne, and too many of us have spent too little time discovering it. How I Found Freedom in an Unfree World is not a book about economics and politics, although there is some of it. It is a personal manifesto about how Harry Browne discovered how to live as a free man by avoiding various intellectual “traps,” as he called them; by escaping from government as much as possible; walking away from bad social, family, business, and other problems; and how this can help you to start a new — and freer — life.
It is time to rekindle this conversation among those of us who wish to live in freedom as much as humanly possible. That is the purpose of the next Mises Circle, “Living Free in an Unfree World,” to be held in Albuquerque, New Mexico on September 14. Mises Institute scholars Peter Klein and Ryan McMaken will discuss new technology, alternative media, political decentralization, and other means of discovering the world outside of the state.
Registration is only $60 and includes a catered lunch at a great Mexican restaurant. Copies of How I Found Freedom in an Unfree World will be available for sale there, as will be Mises Institute publications. Use the QR code ABQ for 10% off the ticket price.
