No Oil, No Luck?

Writes Talha Rizvi: “I looked around all the major newspapers, websites of the US, and even much of Britain, but found little mention on the front pages (other than the BBC) of the extraordinary peace initiatives being made in the Sudan as I write this. We are talking the possible end to a twenty-year civil war that cost the lives of at least two million. One wonders why this isn’t given more coverage. Is it perhaps that reconciliation between Christian and Muslim sides, in a conflict which has been used to point out irreconcilable differences, is not welcome news? Perhaps this weakens the ‘clash of civilizations’ argument the political elites have been using in order to scare people about ‘Islamic barbarian hordes’ at the gates. Prospects of peace in the world don’t work well in government plans.

“But then again, it could just be that they could care less. No oil, no luck.”
