A Great Southern Story

Writes Brion McClanahan:

I wanted to pass along a little story from my vacation last week.

My family and I spent the week near Gatlinburg, TN. We read about this little place called Tuckaleechee Caverns. It had great reviews so we decided to visit.

Everyone should go.

The Caverns are a perfect example of personal property and entrepreneurship.

They were discovered by two six year old boys before World War II. They both served in the war (at Normandy of all places) and decided that if they made it home they would buy the land around the caverns and open them to the public.

Both made it back and became teachers. They spent their afternoons building walkways and staircases and adding lights.

When they opened in the 1950s, people were amazed at this little diamond in the rough. It has a 200 ft underground waterfall and a little running brook (98% pure water that you can drink right from the source) among other features.

Their hobby became a career and turned out to be a good investment. The Caverns are still family owned and operated.

But that is not the most amazing thing from my perspective.

When I walked into the little shop above the Caverns, I turned to look at their book selection.

This was the only book on St. Abe in the place:

Turns out both the owner and his son love DiLorenzo’s book and are avid readers of LewRockwell.com.

So, if you are near Gatlinburg, TN, head over to the Tuckaleechee Caverns. Not only will be you seeing a wonderful site, you’ll be supporting great people.
