From Enlightenment to Ignorance: Society’s Dangerous Embrace of Stupidity

April 1, 2024

Writes Brian:

Beautiful and frightening article. I have had very similar conversations with friends over many years, stretching back far enough for the subjects of our focus to be Gen-Xers. The trend proceeds parabolically apace.

When the film Idiocracy was released (2006), I used to claim that the inside joke was that the film didn’t intend to be prophetic at all. It was actually a depiction of the current day, not a world centuries forward — which is far less insulting to The Snowflake Culture. This seems even more true nearly 20 years later.

The brilliant lyrics of Man on the Moon (R.E.M., 1992) also come to mind, a study in cynicism and narcissism, the ridicule of all that is transcendent, whether real or mythical.
