9/11 and Lahaina

September 14, 2023

Hi Lew,

If the reports are true, people trying to escape the Lahaina fire were turned back by barricades on the road out. From some reports there were people who ignored the officials, followed their instincts, and drove around the barricades to safety. We now refer to those people as survivors. When I read those articles it reminded me of another forgotten aspect of the 9/11 tragedy. It came out later that after the “planes” had hit the towers and the upper floors were burning, the managers and officials were telling the workers in those offices to just stay where they were until they received instructions on what to do. In the case of 9/11 I believe the majority of the people ignored the official recommendations and ran for the stairwells. Just as in the Lahaina case, we refer to those people as survivors. The lesson is repeated many times throughout history. Ignore the experts/officials and follow your instincts.
