“V” for Vendetta

August 2, 2006

When my wife and I were flying back from Prague a few weeks ago, our British Airways flight had a few films that kept repeating. One of them was “‘V’ for Vendetta,” a film I had seen many weeks before. Needless to say, the time passed much more rapidly watching and rewatching this excellent motion picture.

V for Vendetta

Writes Thomas Luongo: “It is, in my mind, the best thing Alan Moore has written (yes, over Watchmen, The Killing Joke and From Hell) and an even more unflichingly scathing attack on the pillars of power than the film is. So, as a start I highly recommend a persual of the source text where you will find a more overt and in-depth discussion of anarchism in the land of ‘Do-As-You-Please.’ For example, there is a wonderful scene early on where V breaks up with the statue of Justice at the Old Bailey telling her off, that he’s found a new love (Anarchism) because she had proven false having allied herself with the state. Then he blows her up. There is as well, a frank discussion of the differences between anarchy and chaos. The book is more like W.B. Yeats’ description of a gtye than a building up to a brief moment of rebellion. That said, though, the Wachowski’s did a fine job of restructuring a comic originally told as a series of 8-10 page vignettes into a coherent screenplay. No easy task, that.”

“V for Vendetta”

March 17, 2006

My wife and I just got back from watching “V for Vendetta.” WOW!! Not only is this the greatest anti-state movie I have ever seen – nothing else comes close in my mind – but one of the best films (regardless of content) I have seen. The acting is superb (especially that of the heroine); the production, script, and direction are marvelous. Even if this film had been about anti-vivisectionism it would be a great film.

This film far, far exceeded my expectations. It explores the dynamics of tyranny; how we are ruled by our own fears; and, . . . well, go see it for yourselves!
