It is a superb synthesis for younger LRC readers of the incredible story of Propaganda Due (P2) and the key figures which lay behind this morality tale of intrigue and the corrupting hubris of international financial and political elites. As I pointed out in an earlier blog, over thirty years ago this story fascinated (almost obsessed) me. It was one of my first real introductions of how the “deep state” internecine web of connections within the world of finance, politics, intelligence, and organized crime interlocked. I read almost everything I could get my hands on. I still have the shelf of books by veteran researchers and investigative journalists on this major ongoing scandal. James Jesus Angleton, the long-time CIA counter-intelligence chief who was intimately connected to the Vatican and its intelligence networks, described his clandestine work as venturing into the “Wilderness of Mirrors.” That was certainly the case with trying to make sense of the wider implications of P2, particularly as it applied to Operation Gladdio and the possible murder of Pope John Paul I.
