Not the Only LP Member to Hold National Office
June 26, 2021
I have nothing personal against former House member Justin Amash and am not questioning his libertarianism, but I wish libertarians would stop describing him as the only LP member to hold national office. He did not run as a libertarian and was not elected as a libertarian. He was a Republican who changed his party affiliation to independent and then to Libertarian, but then declined to run for another term.
Come to think about it, these same libertarians rarely had a good thing to say about Ron Paul when he was the only real libertarian in Congress for many years.
Laurence M. Vance [send him mail] writes from central Florida. He is the author of The Free Society; War, Christianity, and the State: Essays on the Follies of Christian Militarism; War, Empire, and the Military: Essays on the Follies of War and U.S. Foreign Policy; King James, His Bible, and Its Translators, and many other books. His newest book is The U.S. Proxy War in Ukraine.
