Momentous Virginia Militia/Gun Sanctuary Movement Challenges Domestic-Sourced Tyranny

Democrats in the Virginia legislature are attempting to pass a range of gun control laws. Dozens of localities have responded by declaring themselves 2nd Amendment sanctuaries. “76 out of 95 counties, 9 out of 38 independent cities, and 13 towns have adopted second amendment sanctuary resolutions.” Tazewell County is establishing a militia in the county.

The Virginia Attorney General has attempted to negate these local declarations on the grounds that localities cannot nullify state law. Localities certainly can nullify restrictive gun laws by using other available laws, such as the 2nd Amendment itself or the power of sheriffs to deputize and thus form a militia. Tazewell County Administrator Eric Young argues

“Article I, Section 13, of the Constitution of Virginia reserves the right to ‘order’ militia to the localities. Therefore, counties, not the state, determine what types of arms may be carried in their territory and by whom. So, we are ‘ordering’ the militia by making sure everyone can own a weapon.”

When motivated, there are still ample numbers of Americans who maintain the country’s revolutionary traditions and can draw upon them in legally-shaped ways to resist domestic-sourced tyranny, which is what the Virginia anti-gun legislation is.

I received the following e-mail from Marc Davis about the emotion this has stirred. I publish it with his permission:

“Thanks for mentioning the 2nd amendment sanctuary movement in Virginia on LRC today. I live in Roanoke County and we had our meeting several weeks ago. I’ve never seen a grass roots movement like this. We had at least 1000 attend the BOS meeting. It overflowed from the main room to an overflow room, into the hall and out the building. It passed unanimously. Even the supervisors were saying ‘no way are we giving anything up in this county’. The Tazewell County sheriff has indicated he will deputize all males between the age of 18 and 55. Several other counties have declared the same. This isn’t just a sanctuary but also a militia movement. If you are interested in keeping up with our progress here is a link to the Virginia Citizens Defense League. Although this is grass roots they are spearheading the movement. LINK to Virginia Citizens Defense League.

“Sic Semper Tyrannis”

Whether you call it a civil war or a revolution, America is on the cusp of a serious political reworking, and it’s to the good. This gun and militia movement shows the depth of feeling that can be aroused. Plenty of Americans are fed up with domestic tyranny, at federal, state and local levels, and they’re ready to mobilize themselves to revamp the system.

The Virginia focus on gun ownership and rights is far, far superior to street demonstrations that are diffuse and formless. The 2nd Amendment focus is far superior to demonstrations that are socialist in nature, making demands for property and intruding upon rights. It is far superior to the anti-speech activities of Antifa. It makes far more sense than anti-Trump marches that have no basis other than dislike of a man’s personality or wisecracks, or that seek to impose new forms of tyranny. The gun focus is sound per se and sound as change within a framework of sound laws.

At this moment, Democrats happen to be the prime instigators of tyranny, but Republicans are complicit and their tyranny has to be rebuked too. If the country had risen up against Republican Bush’s Iraq propaganda and war, that too would have been excellent; but it didn’t happen. The national security/media/political/military complex got its way.

What we need is a party dedicated to making the country a free country, as opposed to a country that’s a welfare state, a national security state, a lying media state, a socialist state, a handout state, a lying state, a totalitarian state, and what sums it all up, a tyrannical state. Our historical importance was a battle against tyranny, and we’ve allowed ourselves again to be tyrannized. We’ve even pursued it under the delusion that it made us better off by uniting us into a powerful empire with magical economic powers. It’s past time to wake up. Half of us at least think that Trump is the problem or that climate is the problem or that being accepted as gay or transgender is the problem or that slavery is the problem. The problem is tyranny and our acceptance, even desire, for tyranny. Too many of us want to rule over everyone else or enslave them, and they debate what enactments will best accomplish this. Freedom requires a different attitude altogether.

What we face is tyranny that’s far worse than that of King George. People in 1776 fully understood that tyranny could have domestic sources once the King was removed from power, and they looked to people’s control of their legislatures and divided government, among other things like a constitution, to avoid anarchy and support their newly-won freedom. They explicitly thought that they could not long prosper in a state of nature. Knowing the tendency of men to grasp for power and become tyrants, they thought that representation would avoid the problem of domestic tyranny. This has proven insufficient to such an extent that we now face the problem of tyranny worse than King George’s all over again.

At least some Virginians are drawing a line on the freedom to own guns, and this is pointing out to us that we can resist all the other forms of government tyranny that also need to be excised.

Nine states now have gun sanctuary counties. It’s a good start. Widespread organized militia that have legal support, even if not that of elected state officers, would be another step in the right direction. This would make state officials quake and separate the tyrants from the freedom-supporters.

The goal is to repeal the structure of tyrannical laws that now blanket the country.
