Are We Looking For A Fight In The South China Sea?

The USS Lassen, a guided-missile destroyer, was sent to the South China Sea yesterday to see how serious China was about protecting the 12 mile zone around two newly-constructed islands. The US claims China is trying to restrict commerce in the region by building the islands and it views a US military presence as necessary to refute Chinese claims. Is the saber-rattling necessary?
