Karl Rove Is Ignorant of the Constitution
June 23, 2015
Karl Rove recently said about the Second Amendment:
The only way to guarantee that we would dramatically reduce acts of violence involving guns is to basically remove guns from society, and until somebody gets enough oomph to repeal the Second Amendment, that’s not going to happen. I don’t think it’s an answer.
Whether he favors repealing the Second Amendment or was speaking hypothetically is irrelevant—just like the Second Amendment. The Second Amendment confers no positive right. The Bill of Rights is an additional limitation on federal power to infringe upon gun rights besides the fact that no authority is granted to the federal government in its limited, enumerated powers to infringe upon them in the first place. If the Second Amendment didn’t exist, Americans would still have the natural right to keep and bear arms. And besides, the Second Amendment hasn’t stopped the federal government from passing a single piece of gun legislation.
Karl Rove is ignorant of the Constitution, just like most conservatives, including Sen. Mike Lee.
