Impersonators

February 1, 2011

Writes Gary North:

With respect to the death of the great impersonator David Frye, and why no one has replaced him, Frank Gorshin, and Rich Little, is the versatility of the big-name actors and the nondescript personalities of the others. How can anyone imitate Meryl Streep? Which role? The same applies to deNiro. These people are like chameleons. They are not Jimmy Stewart, Henty Fonda, John Wayne, and Gregory Peck, who played one character. On the other hand, how would someone imitate Paris Hilton?

There is a scene in “Hooper” where Burt Reynolds’ character is taken to a clinic by his buddy. The buddy brags to the receptionist about the great imitation Burt does of Gabby Hayes. Burt does it.  It’s pretty good. The receptionist is unimpressed.  She asks: “Can you do Henry Winkler?”
