In the weekend “scene planner” of my local newspaper is an announcement of a fundraiser for the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA). The “Y” is sponsoring a pub crawl (!) from 5-10 PM. It is asking everyone to “dress up as members of the band Village people.” According to the Wikipedia entry for “The Village People,” the band was “created . . . to target disco’s gay audience by featuring popular gay fantasy [personalities].” The costumes of band members were “based on the fantasy attire often worn by gay men of Grenwich Village . . .”
