Dear Professor – Stefan Molyneux did an interview with Erik Prince from BlackWater. Am I missing something here – aren’t government contractors not free market? I don’t doubt Mr. Prince’s motivations and intentions, seems like a nice enough guy, but how is this libertarian? What do you think? BP
Dear PB: I can’t comment on that interview, since I didn’t see, listen to, it. However, with regard to contracting with government, dealing with government, things are pretty complicated. I contracted with government for many years when as a student, I attended a public university, and later as a professor taught at a series of public universities (Stony Brook, SUNY, Baruch College, CUNY, Rutgers, U of Central Arkansas). Even nowadays I “contract” with the state whenever I mail a letter, borrow a book from a public library, pay a toll on one of their roads or bridges, etc. Does that disqualify me from being a libertarian? I really hope not. Here are some of my publications on this issue:
