Dakota’s Despots

South Dakota has benefitted throughout the COVIDCon from a governor who has famously refused to play doctor to her subjects. Kristi Noem alone among rulers has respected the limits of her power and the Constitution, leaving South Dakotans free to protect themselves from flu as they judge best.

But few of the state’s local dictators are as restrained as Ms. Noem. Ergo, Sioux Falls’ City Council entertained a motion to extend the city’s mandate for masks last week. Unhappy and courageous patriots denounced this tyranny in testimony before the Council.

Mike Welfl lives in South Dakota, though fortunately for him, not in Sioux Falls. He forwarded the video of his fellow serfs’ protesting Their Rulers’ overreach to me along with this summary:

Not one citizen spoke in favor of masks. I think every one of them knew the majority of council members were not going to listen to them, and they said so; however, they felt compelled to try anyway. They spoke not only about the loss of their constitutional rights, but also about how masks are pitting the formerly friendly residents of Sioux Falls against one another. One or two of them even discussed the damage this is inflicting on their unmasked school children.

Should you wish to hear their cries for freedom, Mike also included these instructions (the video captures the Council’s entire meeting, not just the pertinent part):
