Chanting and Political Speech

July 19, 2019

Two brief observations. First, Trump’s tweet about Ilhan Omar was MILD. It was mild on an absolute scale and compared to the verbal abuse and accusations heaped upon him in the past years. This includes abuse coming from Nancy Pelosi. The reactions to his tweet are indicative of that kind of abuse.

Second, chanting during speeches, political conventionsis and rallies is not an uncommon thing. When Pelosi addressed a California state convention on June 1 this year, the audience chanted “Impeach”. They wanted to send Trump home.

The current anti-Trump abuse is so extreme that it compares such chants at his rally to Hitler and Germany in the 1930s. The anti-Trump crowd has been making comparisons like that even before he was elected.
