WSJ cover story – tariffs fail to aid US factories

Writes Steve Berger:

Geez, what a surprise. The tariffs raised costs of inputs for factories, China engaged in retaliatory tariffs, and consumers are always harmed by tariffs. Either a little knowledge of economic theory or economic history ( Smoot Hawley) might have helped defog the orange man, but he has probably never read a book his entire life. Gets votes though to say you are going to be tough on China and force buy American.

Given his short attention span, maybe I should just mail him Bastiat’s Petition to the Candlemakers. But, that may be too long to read so maybe better yet, just tweet him Bastiat’s quote, “ When goods do not cross borders, troops will.”
