Trump’s Grandfather and Helmut Kohl From Same Region

Grandfather Trump’s home town Kallstadt is today in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate, which a century ago belonged to Bavaria, but no longer does. If you want to get an idea of the kind of people that region can bring forth, think Helmut Kohl https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Helmut_Kohl. He was born (in 1930) in Kallstadt’s next door city of Ludwigshafen (about 5 miles away). As chancellor of West Germany (1982-1998), Kohl was instrumental in bringing about German reunification. As a man, he was tall and stout. As a politician, he was stubborn, wily and utterly ruthless. He was culturally conservative and deeply rooted in his home region. Because of him being provincial (the German equivalent of being from “flyover country”), the intellectuals and the left leaning media viciously branded him as boorish and dumb. Despite that he remained chancellor for 16 years (he got re-elected three times), in the course of which he helped change world history.
