Trans fixiation

Writes John McClain:

Dear Lew,

I’m 66, a great grandfather, and I’ve been a Christian since my return from Beirut and had an alcohol crisis brought on by our occupation 82-83.  My step-grandson and his wife have a nine year old boy and a seven year old girl, so this transgender issue is becoming a serious issue in my personal life.

Yesterday, in Sunday school, we were going through a lesson out of a book used for and it startled me when reading through and noting it spoke of God making Adam, “a human” and making a “human” out of one of his ribs.  It’s the first time I’ve heard and seen the story of Creation refer to Adam and Eve as “created humans, rather than Man and Woman.

I didn’t think in the moment, just felt uncomfortable, and realized it was that word causing the discomfort but the connection came sitting at home after church.  I attend a Methodist church and it went through the break-away and came out as part of the Global Methodist church precisely because of, against the transgender issue that has done so much damage.

There are a couple people in my class that are in their thirties, the whole church is a good eclectic mix from 18 and just married, lots of kids to some folks in the nineties and many in their eighties.  It typically has 60 to 70 attendance, close to double that at Easter and other holy days, and I really like and respect the stance my church has taken.  I didn’t realize how much this mattered until I was home, but will have to bring it up with our pastor, a man I really respect and like and is a good and powerful speaker dealing with this issue among the community of churches in our town of about 1000.

I live among farms, probably half the church is in town, and the rest from the county around, and all of us seem to have at least some serious concern on this issue.  We are exploring a different publisher and source for our printed material because of these serious issues of family.

I think we have a good handle on it, but just wanted to tell you it’s an issue that impacts even small town church and no doubt schools.  I really appreciate what you do for the Christian community.

God Bless,

John McClain
