The MLK High Holy Day

January 24, 2024

Writes Mark Higdon:

At 73, my own seminal recollection of MLK news videos is this, beginning in 1963: In all of his “iconic” mass-public orations, he looked and sounded viscerally angry. Not wise. Not visionary. Not conciliatory. Just plain enraged.

As an early teen and beyond to the present, I have never gotten past this first impression of him as a reflexive mortal enemy of anyone and anything that challenged his philosophies, rhetoric or agendae to any degree whatsoever.

I find it impossible to relate to anyone–contemporary or historical–so gut-motivated and -oriented. Which is why I never even considered MLK as any kind of saint: religious or secular.

That said, read carefully my post-signature quotation. Clearly, a distinction with a difference. I.e., only Thomas is a true Saint.
