School Board Meetings

Hi Lew,

I have been reading the articles and various posts related to parents becoming irate at school board meetings. I recently received a text from an old friend that included video a woman at a meeting, I believe, in Fairfax, VA. After seeing a story about two books some parent discovered in their local high school library somewhere in Texas, she checked the library in her son’s high school and found the same two books. They contained very explicit cartoon type drawings and stories of men having sex with teenage boys. Naturally, this outraged she, and other parents. My response to my friend was I have no sympathy for these parents. I several years ago they had a book, I think titled “My Two Moms”. If I remember correctly, it was not in the library but being used in elementary level classes. There was not much parental outcry. The list of alphabet mafia stuff interjected into the schools is long and did not start in the last few months. Very little parental outcry. They implemented Common Core which virtually guaranteed these people’s kids would learn nothing and there was little outcry. They have been giving kids dangerous drugs for years and there not only wasn’t much outcry, most parents happily went along with it. In short, the schools have been screwing up these people’s kids for years in ways that are arguably much worse than the current nonsense. I am guessing the reason parents were unaware of the presence of these books is because most of the semi-literate students at her son’s high school have never touched a book in the library. I know the theory is all the outrage is due to the schools finally going too far. I think this is probably true but I also have another, more cynical thought. Are these parents actually more pissed off at, and more closely scrutinizing the schools simply because they are mad at the system for dumping responsibility for their kids back on them for the past few.
