When Cleveland was nominated in 1884, going on to beat James G. Blaine, “The Continental Liar From the State of Maine,” in the general, the high point of the convention was the seconding speech of Gen. Edward S. Bragg, who said of Cleveland’s supporters, “They love him, gentlemen, and they respect him, not only for himself, for his character, for his integrity and judgment and iron will, but they love him most of all for the enemies he has made.”
