Der Spiegel Censors Its Bestseller List

Writes Robert Groezinger:

They claim the book in question is “antisemitic and historically revisionist”.

“Der Spiegel” simply deleted it from their bestseller list (when it was #6), and moved all lower listed books up one. This, in the internet age, does not remain unnoticed for long.

The article quotes the editor: “Our decision was welcomed by a lot of readers and criticised by some (and criticised by a few other media and digital newsletters).”

I think many Germans would disagree. The move has created a “Streisand effect”: The book (“Finis Germania”) is now on #1 of German Amazon’s bestseller list.

And that even though Amazon.de refuses to supply it directly, meaning buyers have to pay for shipping from the publisher. (Which is ironic because that way Amazon.de is supplying the publisher with loads of customer addresses.) Amazon.de are obviously just as squeamish about the book as “Der Spiegel”.

I haven’t read the book myself, but it is not forbidden in Germany, so whatever is in it that “Der Spiegel” considers to be antisemitic, German officials don’t seem to agree. According to the “Guardian” article about this, the book’s publisher says that “the scandal surrounding the book ‘has shown that none of the claqueurs has ever read the book at all’.”
