Dayton Shooting Shenanigans

First, I should mention that I live in Dayton, not too far from where the shooting occurred. Like any normal person, I think it’s is a great tragedy and grieve for those who have lost loved ones and for my city.

That being said, I was immediately skeptical on the day it happened when every single headline mentioned how the police had stopped the shooting in less than a minute. Since when do the police ever respond so quickly? It seems every shooting like this has a part of the narrative highlighted by the media to further their own ends (like the hype that the El Paso shooter was a “white supremacist”), and my thought was that this was no different. So, for the Dayton shooting the initial narrative seemed to revolve around the fast response of the “hero” first responders.

Now, in this AP write up, we learn that not only did the police shoot him 24(!) times, they also sent at least 2 stray rounds into two of the people who died. Now, the coroner is saying those weren’t the lethal rounds, though forgive me for being a little skeptical that the state would admit otherwise. Regardless, it was hardly the embodiment of a fast, precision response by the police, which was the impression given in all the news accounts immediately after the event.

This AP piece also mentions that the shooter was on cocaine and antidepressants (hardly a surprise). I have no doubt the cocaine angle will be played up for the benefit of the drug war, and the antidepressant use hardly mentioned. Unless, of course, it is deemed useful to push for the “red flag” laws being loudly trumpeted, including by our so-called conservative congressional rep.  One thing I’m sure of: it won’t be used as a springboard to examine why so many people are being drugged up with these psychotropic medications, and why so many mass shooters are on them.
