The fact is that never had the rate of human bondage been so high as in our time, because it was proportional to the invisibility of the tyrants. Actually, the latter showed their faces less and less, they disappeared behind the countless technical means which they had bought from science to enslave the masses….For if men seek happiness in security, it is quite true that they are capable at most of discovering the instruments of their weakness and slavery which have been elaborated by engineers but forged by their own hands. Thus, in order to overcome human beings the tyrants had also invented a kind of fake tolerance, of fake broadening of outlooks, which were probably born of the myth of equality and which wretchedly permeated the whole century, debasing the higher values to the level of the lower, merging the beautiful and the ugly, causing preferences that raise a vile stew of coarse equivalents. This itching of applause at any cause could not be an emanation of love, the sign of a rapprochement of human differences in the direction of a single light, it was rather the sickening proof of the growing insipidity of life in an age when concessions to baseness, the cult of fatality, and the profanation of the sacred constituted Fashion.
