A Christian brother sent out the standard July 4th message. My response:
More David Barton history.
How about this history, from other founding documents:
1. Whereas the several states are founded upon principles that recognize the supremacy of God and the rule of law …
2. In the name of God, source of all reason and justice, the several states …
3. Whereas the people of the several states profess their full belief in Jesus Christ, Our Lord …
Oh, wait, the first is the preamble to a section of the Canadian constitution, the second from the preamble to the Argentina constitution, and the third from Malta (substitute “the several states” with the respective country name).
Yet, you quoted the Declaration that was arguing for the separation of the colonies from England. It is not the document that founded the United States. That would be the Constitution — a document that does not mention God. And our government officially declared early on that the US is not a Christian nation.
Instead of invoking the names of God and Jesus Christ, the writers of our Declaration went with the then-woke, politically correct “Nature’s God.” Are you OK with that reference as a sign of faithfulness to the one and only God? Especially given the examples above, with other examples not listed.
Now, given the preambles listed above, what makes US the one true city on the hill?
I suggest you read more history than that which is taught in public schools or emanates from court historians. You might discover the writers and signers of the Declaration and Constitution were just political men. And, in the case of the Declaration, were making a political argument and not really establishing a Christian nation. Or even a proposition nation.
And that is OK. They do not need to be made saints … unless you need to justify neoconism as your religion.
