Yay Oliver Stone!!

I have always liked Oliver Stone films. I thus expected the best in his current movie, “Snowden.” This may well be the best one he has done! My wife and I just returned from seeing it, and it is not only a wonderful picture from an aesthetic perspective, but is faithful to the facts. My wife remarked, as we left the theater, that it was one of those few movies from which you leave crying.

I was most impressed by the fact that the politicians – Bush, Obama, etc. – were not the “bad guys.” The focus was on the evil nature of the corporate-state-military system itself. The Snowden-Greenwald-Poitras-Guardian newspaper people – so well portrayed in the Hong Kong period of events – came off as lovely examples of Albert Jay Nock’s “Remnant.” We applauded deep within when the Guardian paper hit the newsstand!

While the politicians and mainstream media chattering classes tried presenting Snowden as a mix of disgruntled “hacker,” the movie made clear the deep moral and other principles that drove him to his courageous and heroic acts. Therein lay the strength and hope for the future. The established order will require bright, creative, and thoughtful minds to design and control the technology upon which the system depends for its life-destructive schemes. But these same brilliant minds may be most motivated to expose the state’s evil practices from within.

The times in which we live are depressing to many, a condition I see as a short-term malady analogous to a bad case of the flu. There is a life-force which, like a healthy immune system, will help restore mankind to health. In the meantime, a trip to a theater to see “Snowden” may be the best remedy for a dispirited soul!
