Why Are We Burning Beehives?

Did you know a beekeeper in New Zealand was forced to burn 10,000 bee boxes under threat of fines and even imprisonment?

After limited positive tests for American Foulbrood spores, entire bays of equipment — including brand new, shrink-wrapped boxes — were ordered destroyed. All under biosecurity enforcement.

How does this happen?

Twenty five years ago I was a beekeeper living in Iowa across the road from a large soybean field.

Early one hot July morning I heard the unmistakable drone of crop-dusting and – horrified – I rushed out to find clouds of Glyophosate freshly suspended in the air above the bean fields.

Funny thing…it looked like dew.

But it was not… And it was too late for my beautiful girls who’d already left the hive to do their daily work.

They flew headlong through the toxic mist and by the time they were home they were already ailing.

Then their sister-workers eagerly cleaned them and unloaded their loads of pollen to mix it with the newly delivered honey to make and distribute yummy bee-bread (they believed) throughout the hive.

All was beautiful they thought… but they were about to have they’re own little Jonestown mass murder tragedy… except this time for them the agent was different.

I was supposed to be notified of the spraying as I had my hives registered with the State of Iowa and – legally – crop dusting businesses were supposed to notify us so we could put up the hive barriers designed to keep my bees from flying that day.

But no such call came and as a result that day all the honey collected was poisoned and all the bees fell terribly sick by nightfall.

I can’t tell you how heart wrenching it is to have to then burn the hives while these magnificent creatures are still alive and already suffering.

And then the honey combs and brood too must also be treated like a hazmat scene and disposed.

The money lost was just money.

But the trauma still is there.

My story is different. It’s the story of profound negligence and the mere stupidity of others.

But Dr Sam’s story today is worse. Hers is also of stupidity, for sure, but it’s a different kind of stupidity…

…It’s institutional. It’s a mass cult like belief in the righteousness of this murder story.

And it’s MUCH MORE FAR REACHING IMPACTS ON HUMAN LIFE are totally preventable.
