Where’ve We Heard This Before?

Paul Craig Roberts takes a sensible and level-headed look at Patriots’ options in his column today. And his diagnosis is dire, particularly when he discusses armaments:

…today the weapons in the hands of the military are devastating compared to those in the hands of the public. Unlike in the past, it is impossible for a citizens’ militia to stand against the weapons and body armor that the military has.  So, unless the military splits, [Patriots] are outgunned.  Never believe that the Establishment would not release chemical and biological agents against red forces.  Or for that matter nuclear weapons.

I’m a fan of PCR, so I hesitate to question his pronouncements. But his warning sounds remarkably similar to those that Tories and Loyalists issued prior to the American Revolution. How could farmers and shopkeepers possibly stand against the British Empire? Its armies had defeated France, for pity’s sake! His Majesty’s forces were the world’s most proficient; recruits from England’s brutal lower classes and prisons endured extensive training and draconian discipline to mold them into a formidable killing-machine. Innocent farm-boys who spent their days milking and hoeing could never hope to match these drilled careerists.

But people fighting for their lives and liberties pulled off miracle after miracle from 1775 until fighting pretty much ended in 1781. Under God, of course.

Under God.
