Taserific

November 16, 2007

Writes AO: “Had an interesting thought about tasers. Maybe you’ve considered this before, in which case disregard. I saw this video today at work by random coincidence. It’s some clips from an initial taser test involving 3000 volunteers, mostly cops I believe, which supposedly demonstrates how safe and effective the taser is.

“What’s interesting about this is the very artificial environment created for the tests: tasered “victims” are helped to the ground as they fall, and then peacefully lie there while they recover. All of them knew they would be tasered. Of course this stands in sharp contrast to an actual arrest situation where in a tasered individual’s natural instincts are probably going to take over IMMEDIATELY in the moment of shock and surprise (no pun intended)–i.e, the fight or flight mechanism. Real people,.in contrast to the cops here, are unprepared to be tasered. My bet would be that they will likely have an animal (fight or flight) reaction to tasering, which probably makes arresting them harder, not easier. Their natural human instinct then gets them killed. And frankly, being shocked silly probably doesn’t do a lot to help the rational mind overcome this. Kind of reminds me of the line in Pulp Fiction “Oh, I’m sorry, Brett, did I break your concentration?” A “non-lethal” weapon that fails to account for natural human instinct and nervous system auto-reaction is going to kill a lot of people when they respond ‘inappropriately.’

“And that’s without even adding the addled, confused, and fearful condition of some of these recent victims into the mix.

“Given that this video is probably a pretty accurate portrayal of how cops ‘train’ with these things it’s no wonder the morons keep killing
people with them…

“Of course, the best solution is just to take the tasers away from the cops, entirely.”
