Sociopaths in Washington

May 12, 2013

I’ve been told that my description of people without remorse might be summed up in one word: sociopath. There is some, indeed quite a lot, of correspondence. It is not a perfect correspondence, but certain aspects are worthy of mention. The one that struck me the most and is the reason for this blog is that in the linked profile, below a list of related qualities, there is a statement: “In the 1830’s this disorder was called ‘moral insanity.'” I was not aware of this when I made my comments about a “moral reality” being a scarce element in Washington these days. That list, by the way, includes authoritarian, secretive, looking for situations where their tyrannical behavior is admired, an emotional need to justify their behavior (I had spoken of rationalization), extreme narcissism, and a goal of ruling the world.
