Dear Dr. Block,

I’m confused by the situation in Venezuela. Is it legitimate for non-Venezuelans to intervene by force to help Venezuelans against a despot (Maduro)?

Sincerely, F

Dear F:

In my opinion, it is indeed “legitimate for non-Venezuelans to intervene by force to help Venezuelans against a despot (Maduro)?” However, it would not be licit for the US or any other government to do so. Under libertarian minarchism, the only legitimate function of government is to protect its citizens against foreign (or domestic) invasion. Madura, evil socialist (redundancy) that he is, shows no indication that he will invade any other country, certainly not the US.

The model for private people trying to topple Maduro would be the Lincoln Brigade (composed in part by private citizens of the US, UK) who went to Spain in 1936 to fight Franco.

Best regards,

Walter
