Saving Syria

September 26, 2015

I was on RT’s Crosstalk yesterday to discuss the rapidly evolving situation in Syria. Russia apparently has determined that an ISIS victory in Syria — with Aleppo just a 700 mile drive from Grozny — is not in its national interest, and has taken measures to ensure that the Syrian government, which Russian President Vladimir Putin correctly points out is still the internationally recognized legitimate government, is given more tools to fight the jihadist onslaught. One year of US bombing has made no discernible difference in ISIS’s strength. The US has taken to warning Russia that any move seen as helping Assad stay in power is doomed to fail. But are they secretly becoming more worried that it is in fact the US strategy of attacking Assad and ISIS that is failing?
