How great that Monty Python’s Terry Jones has a book and BBC series on the highly advanced “barbarian” civilizations the Romans smeared, looted, and wrecked, or tried to, from Celts to Greeks to Germans to Persians. This is fascinating and instructive revisionism. Also extraordinary: Joe Marchant’s new book on that stunning piece of ancient Greek hi-tech, the Antikythera Mechanism. A complicated analog computer from 100 BC? Yes, and an example of the developments the Romans–manaical luddites and conservatives that they were–tried to suppress.
