Rick Steves Went to Iran

September 18, 2013

Rick Steves, the man who does travel shows, went to Iran. Some resources and photos of his travel are here. (Thanks to Brian Dunaway for this.)

There’s one photo of a political mural and you can read “Down with the USA”. So, why are the people smiling for the camera of Steves and having him home for dinner? Mutual government hostility, and the history that goes with it.

In my days of a very limited income, I lived at a Graduate Living Center. Roommates were assigned, and I had a succession: a German, a Canadian, an Austrian, a Taiwanese, and an Iranian. He was studying nuclear physics, yes nuclear physics. I assure you, he was like anyone else. This was in the early 70s, six years before the Revolution. At that time, the U.S. may even have provided support to Iranian grad students in this area of study.
