re: Religion at William and Mary

Regarding Butler’s question about William and Mary being a private school: It is not; it identifies itself as a “public” or “state-assisted” college. In bureaucratese this means it gets a large percentage of its budget from the taxpayers of Virginia (mostly)but also has a private endowment that funds a good chunk of the enterprise. Educational bureaucrats distinguis between “state universities” and “state-assisted” universities even though the difference is only technical. They’re both creatures of the state.
