Butler, perhaps you are thinking of pictures like these ones of the KKK parading around proudly displaying the U.S. flag, the flag that flew over the American slave empire from the late 1770s until 1866.  The fact that the Confederate flag was only an official government flag for about 4 1/2 years probably explains why the KKK preferred the U.S. flag.
