On this date, the 18th Amendment to the Constitution, prohibiting the “manufacture, sale, or transportation of intoxicating liquors for beverage purposes,” is ratified by the requisite number of states. At least prohibitionists knew that they needed to amend the Constitution, unlike drug prohibitionists today. See my article on the significance of the 18th Amendment.
