Nice Letters
May 10, 2017
I gave a lecture on May 3, 2017 to a group of students at Lock Haven University, PA. Here are the students’ reactions to my talk that have so far been sent to me by the organizer of this lecture series:
All in all I thought this was the absolute best speaker I have ever seen in my life. He made me look at things in a different view point that I might have never done before and it blew my mind because most of the time when he said something I would say “wow I never thought of it that way, but I see what he means I kind of agree with that”. I honestly have no idea what I am, but maybe I am Libertarian. I want to keep researching and even read his books to see what else I may agree with him on. I also really enjoy how a few people that I knew that went to see him disagree with what I thought of it and we get in debates about if he is stupid. I think bringing him on campus was great and I hope that it impacted everyone as much as it did to me no matter if they agree with what he said or if they think he was a complete nut job. Thank you for bringing him and broadening my horizons.
Libertarianism is very interesting and something different that I have never thought of or experienced. Dr. Block’s presentation truly helped me understand what Libertarianism is and what it’s about. I was pleased to see a lot of people there because he brought up topics that people are arguing over today and some people want to know how to resolve these conflicts. Dr. Block brought up great points that it would be hard to argue with him about certain topics. I am pleased that I decided to go to his presentation because it helped me see real world conflicts from a different perspective. The discussion was so good that I couldn’t stop thinking about some of the points he brought up before I went to sleep. I would highly recommend someone to go hear him speak. It really was a great time and I couldn’t thank the Sociology department more for having Dr. Block come in and talk to us. I learned a lot and will use some of his points for arguments in the future.
Dr. Walter Block had many very interesting points and has further expanded my thinking involving the libertarian train of thought. I am very interested in reading these pieces of literature released by such an intellectual public figure. I am also thankful to have had the opportunity to host such influential figures throughout the semester, it has broadened my thinking and I will continue to be involved in such events.
African American Student: To anyone who doesn’t know Dr. Block I would encourage you to get to know him. Usually at most lectures I am prone to falling asleep and asking a few questions out of general curiosity. With the lecture by Dr. Walter Block things went entirely different. Not only was I awake and very interested in what he had to say, but he was the first to make me not really want to ask question. His methods of defending the seemingly undefendable was so interesting and firm that I didn’t want to ask a question that was either too redundant or seemed to be countering what he had to say. He made a strong case for the idea that victimless crimes should never send people to jail… Dr. Block was not only a fantastic man to listen to, but he invokes you to challenge him which is not something we have in our lives nowadays. The lecture made me want to be more curious and to think from a more liberal and abstract view.
A socialist student: While he believes that less patents and copyrights would be beneficial to the economy and as such we as a society should review and change the process, my disparagement originates more in the focus on competition rather than cooperation which the patent process perpetuates. Nevertheless, I felt extremely lucky to have listened to this intellectual speak and to have been given the opportunity to interact with him in real life. This class, while not changing my core beliefs, has proven to be a useful and invigorating educational experience which taught me many things about fellow Americans and peers who perceive the world differently from myself, and Dr. Block was an integral aspect of that amazing experience.
Overall I enjoyed Dr. Block’s lecture. He was possibly my favorite guest lecturer. I believe it was a good thing to bring him here and I hope that he was successful in turning a few minds tonight.
This lecture by Walter Block I found to be very informative. I liked hearing his perspective on things, I also feel like he is a type of person who would hear anyone out on their own opinion. It was nice to hear his views on certain topics, like black mailers and dishonest cops. I probably wouldn’t agree on all of his views but some I understand his viewpoint.
