The first Americans to threaten secession in the post-Revolutionary era were New Englanders who quite violently opposed the presidency of Thomas Jefferson. The early New England secession movement culminated with the Hartford Secession Convention of 1814.
In the tradition of their New England secessionist forefathers, some Maine communities are considering secession as a means of battling predatory tax increases.
