Letter From a Syrian Christian

Writes Samer AlBatal: “In reply to your blog entry concerning Syria and its tolerance for the Christian community, I will concur with Dalrymple’s observations. I am Syrian and was baptised and confirmed in that ancient and holy monastery in Said Naya. Christians in Syria and Lebanon enjoy a degree of tolerance that serves as a sanctuary for them that is not available to our co-religionists in neighbouring Middle Eastern countries such as Egypt and Turkey. Some statements from Mr. Dalrymple’s article are extrapolated from his book entited From the Holy Mountain. I highly recommend this book, which chronicles his visits to the Christian communities of the Middle East, where many shed blood for Christ, our God. Tradition has it that the head of St. John the Baptist lies in the Omayyad Mosque, in what was once a church dedicated to the saint. We can only hope and pray that the Forerunner’s intercession will drive away the threat of an American attack. Please keep us in your prayers.”
