Joke of the Year From the Claremont Institute

August 31, 2011

A friend sent an email about how the neocons at the Claremont Institute are sponsoring a session at the annual meeting of the American Political Science Association that includes the notorious John Yoo, sworn enemy of civil liberties and Claremont associate. His topic is — get ready for a big laugh — “Rehabilitating Lincoln.”

Yoo, you might recall, is the former Bush administration lawyer that told the U.S. Senate that, in his opinion, a president can start a war without the consent of Congress; that presidential “war powers” are unlimited; that “evidence” procured by torture should be permitted in a court of law; and that the Constitution does not provide Americans with Habeas Corpus rights. No guarantee of due process is in the Constitution, according to Yoo.

What the evil Yoo is up to is trying to rehabilitate HIMSELF by making the obvious argument that Lincoln would agree with all of this, which of course he would. This is the main reason why the Claremontistas, who have given their “statesman of the year” awards to the likes of Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld, have chosen Lincoln as their idol. The Lincoln myth is the cornerstone of the propaganda apparatus of American military imperialism.

How amusing that these Lincoln cultists believe that “Father Abraham,” as they call him at the Claremont Institute, is in need of rehabilitation.
