Jesse James, Confederate Veteran

October 5, 2003

Regarding Cort’s BLOG about the Jesse James movie, it’s relevant that the James brothers were Confederate veterans. The transcontinental railroad was the biggest symbol of the corrupt mercantilist Republicans, and was therefore a natural target for their attacks. There’s a story in the literature about how Jesse James was once asked why he rode hundreds of miles to rob a particular bank. He said he had heard that one of Lincoln’s favorites, General Benjamin “Spoons” Butler, had some deposits in the bank, so there must be a lot of money there. Butler, also known as “Beast” Butler, got the nickname “spoons” because he was famous for stealing southerners’ silverware while leading the federal pillaging, plundernig, and looting army through the South.
