In Defense of Icebreakers

“The Coast Guard doesn’t have enough icebreakers, says Shiva Polefka, an Arctic specialist at the Center for American Progress.” Actually, the Coast Guard has just one, the Polar Star, built in the 1970s. Admiral Paul Zukunft, commandant of the Coast Guard, wants more icebreakers built since Russia has 27 and Canada, Finland, and Sweden all have more icebreakers than the United States. Even China has one and another one on the way.

Problem solved. Just stop fighting senseless foreign wars, close the overseas bases, and bring the troops home and the Coast Guard will have plenty of money for more icebreakers. Better that the U.S. military break ice instead of men and property.

Or we could just let the ice melt because of “climate change.”
