I Thought Veterans Were a Cut Above?

It seems like all we hear regarding veterans is how they are homeless, hungry, suicidal, unemployed, addicted to drugs and alcohol, and how they suffer from PTSD. I thought veterans were a cut above? I thought the military made a man out of them? I thought the military instilled pride in them? I thought they were heroes? I thought they were role models? I thought the military taught them valuable skills? So why is it that all we hear is what basket cases they are?
