The GOP Surrenders

How else can one interpret the spectacle of Milquetoast Romney appearing on network television to declare that Donald Trump would be a disastrous choice for the presidency? Was Romney the heaviest piece of artillery the Republicans could muster on behalf of its survival? What do the likes of Bob Dole, Dick Lugar, and John McCain have to offer? Even Harold Stassen should be heard from. What, he’s dead? So is the GOP. What better voice to speak from the political afterlife?

ADDENDUM: My brother-in-law reminded me that I had omitted Wendell Willkie and Tom Dewey from the prominent Republicans who might have something to say about Donald Trump. Like Stassen, Willkie and Dewey are no longer living, but Dewey’s views are particularly important. As you will recall, Dewey was elected president when he defeated Harry Truman in 1948.
