Freedom-Hating as an Avocation

In his latest book, American Contempt for Liberty, the great Walter E. Williams argues that most Americans today do seem to have a contempt for freedom, so brainwashed are they by the government schools and the PC culture of the state. I thought of Walter’s new book recently when a couple of friends sent me emails they received from a neocon pro-war/GOP sycophant who seems to spend all of his days annoying antiwar libertarians with name calling and insults. I have received mail from this same person, who I first heard of when Ilana Mercer wrote me eleven years ago about what she thought was an absurd (and funny) letter in response to one of her columns about how all the neocon Iraq War propagandists were so flat wrong about everything. This professional libertarian hater, who seems to have a special hatred for the writings of Murray Rothbard and Ayn Rand, and who was apparently outraged at Ilana’s calling out of the lying and conniving neocons, took the time to call Ilana Mercer (along with fellow Iraq War opponents Lew Rockwell and Pat Buchanan) “evil” and a “twit.”
People such as this are yet another example of what I wrote about eight years ago, when I argued that it is the neocons, with their PATRIOT Act, NSA spying, and never-ending, government-expanding military adventurism are the real haters of American freedoms. These are the same people who in 2001 invented the novel theory that the Muslim world all-of-a-sudden decided that it hated American freedom. It is our freedom that they hate, said the neocons and their feeble-minded internet minions, and not the fact that the U.S. government had killed hundreds of thousands of Muslims in Iraq and elsewhere in the Middle East in its ongoing program of invasion and occupation.
