Explore the Roots of the Rise of the Modern State

Watch this crucial episode, The Reformation, from the late Eugen Weber’s landmark university-level series, The Western Tradition, which deals with the rise of the European centralized nation-state at the time of the Reformation. Weber’s cogent analysis is very similar to that of Martin van Creveld in his seminal and authoritative volume, The Rise and Decline of the State. Also examine these two excellent books which focus on this crucial topic in regards to the American colonies on the North American continent and their ultimately futile and unsuccessful efforts to resist the establishment of the governance model of the European centralized nation-state on their shores: The American Counter-Revolution in Favor of Liberty: How Americans Resisted Modern State, 1765–1850; and Chaining Down Leviathan: The American Dream of Self-Government 1776-1865.
