Evaluation of W.H.O.

See here for an article dated May 11, 2018 titled “Who Needs the WHO? Not the World’s Poor”. This provides an evaluation of WHO. The publisher is Ideas on Liberty, a reliable pro-liberty source.

Written several years prior to the contemporary dust-up, this article cannot be accused of a bias related to Trump or this election year. Some quotations follow.

“The World Health Organization is a huge waste of taxpayer dollars with incredibly skewed priorities”

“The World Health Organization is a large and antiquated United Nations body that is expensive unnecessary and counterproductive to its own cause of ‘public health.'”

“WHO officials were aware of the [EBOLA] outbreak in spring [of 2014], yet it took until August for the World Health Organization to declare it a public health emergency and take action.”

“The WHO has shifted its focus from communicable diseases to non-communicable diseases (NCDs), caused by fatty foods, smoking, or drinking. Unimpressed by the large-scale consequences of nation-wide epidemics, the WHO prefers to play a nanny and regulates people’s personal behavior. Is this what taxpayers expect to happen?”

“The WHO’s travel expenses for one year are $200 million according to the Washington Post, which means that every single staffer racks up a total of $28,500 per year.”

Contrast this from a Hollywood star actor: “Alec Baldwin offered up this very detailed and insightful take. ‘The WHO has done a lot of good in this world. So naturally, a jealous, myopic, blame seeking Trump hates them.'”

Contrast Rob Reiner’s reaction: “There are no words to describe the sickness and ignorance on display in the Rose Garden today. Suffice it to say calling The President of the United States a fucking moron is being kind.”

There is natural knee-jerk support of the UN, of which WHO is a part, that comes from people who somehow endorse these organizations and think they actually do “good”, or at least good that’s worth their budgets and worth the loss of liberty of taxpayers in many lands who can’t and don’t control these bureaus.

It warms the hearts of ignorant supporters like Baldwin and Reiner and Streisand and Milano to believe that these political bureaucracies are helping out the poor, the disadvantaged, and the huddled masses of the world, even if they do nothing of the kind, and even if they are corrupt.

It is extremely doubtful that these “liberals” ever sit down and actually examine the operations of these organizations or subject their own ill-formed opinions to any sorts of reality checks or questioning.
